A New Name for Widener’s Newest Building

October 27, 2011

The handsome edifice we have been referring to as “the new academic building” will soon be dedicated with a more memorable name: Founders Hall.

Constructed according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, the building is the university’s first “green” academic building.  The architecture of the home of the School of Nursing and the Oskin Leadership Institute compliments that of Old Main.

A dedication ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4 in the lobby of Founders Hall and the ceremony will be webcast live.

Progress on Widener’s New Academic Building

April 14, 2011

The side of the new academic building that includes the entrance to the Oskin Leadership Institute is beginning to look more like the finished product.  Compare the photo above with artist’s rendering below that was published in Widener Magazine last fall.

If you can make it to campus this Friday and/or Saturday for the Alumni Weekend events, be sure to check it out.  Also, note that due to a forecast for rain, the location for the kick-off rally for Taking the Lead — The Campaign for Widener has changed to the gymnasium in the Schwartz Athletic Center.

Building Going Up, Waiting on Snow to Fall

January 11, 2011

Classes resumed yesterday, and those returning to campus could not miss noticing the rapid progress that was made over the break on the new academic building that will house the School of Nursing and the Oskin Leadership Institute.   Gables and walls have gone up, and windows are being framed.  You can watch the progress continue on our live web camera.

Of course, this afternoon everyone’s eyes will be up on the gray sky, anticipating snow through the evening and into the morning.  If there are any delays or closings, they will be announced out our Weather Alert page.

A Hole in the Ground No More — Widener University’s New Academic Building Rising

November 17, 2010

The fall issue of Widener Magazine features a photo I took on Aug. 19 of the construction of the New Academic Building.  From the third floor of Muller Hall, home of Admissions, the site was literally a deep hole in the ground.  Today, it is taller than Muller Hall, as you can see below from a photo taken moments ago from the same vantage point.  Click here for photos of today’s topping off event, and here to see a live web cam of the construction site.   – Sam Starnes, Editor

Pictured below, workers on Wednesday afternoon removed a brick walkway running alongside the construction site in preparation of forthcoming heavy construction vehicles.

A New Widener University Foundation, and a Platform for the Upcoming Graduation

May 6, 2010

Widener President James T. Harris III, with the help of two trustees, the mayor of Chester, the dean of the School of Nursing, and a graduating senior, laid the ceremonial cornerstone on Thursday for the new academic building.  Pictured below Harris, right,  Nicholas P. Trainer, chair of the trustees, and graduating senior Joseph A. Keifer watch former trustees chair David W. Oskin apply mortar.  Nursing Dean Deborah Garrison and Chester Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. also lended a hand to complete the foundation ceremony.  Construction on the building that will house the School of Nursing and the Oskin Leadership Institute starts this summer, and is anticipated to finish in 2011.  It will be the first academic building on campus to be a completely green building with LEED certification.  The building will stand on the site of the old Victory and Loveland halls.

Meanwhile on the lawn behind Old Main, workers were setting up the platform for commencement, scheduled for 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 15. Please see the commencement page for more details and other events.
