A July 4 Tribute from Widener and PMC’s Past

July 3, 2012

Celebration of the meaning of Independence Day has long been on the minds of students at Widener University and its predecessor institution, Pennsylvania Military College. An unidentified PMC student in 1893 wrote about American independence in The Reveille, the student newspaper.

“The success of American ideas of government through the more than completed century has compelled tributes of praise even from unwilling lips,” the article said. “[As] the triumph of democracy is becoming more and more assured, why should not every true American rejoice in the fact?”

Issues of The Reveille and much more information about PMC and other periods of Widener’s long history are available in the Wolfgram Memorial Library Digital Collections of the Widener University Archives.
